The plan
Planning phase. An independent plan; nothing is funded or built yet.
The center would be the main home of the Community Care Network (a planned Project OS module, not built yet), which works through organizations that already exist and many small locations. The center never replaces them or speaks for them.
Outdoors
Community garden
Fruits and vegetables grown on site go straight to the food and water hub.
Courtyard and pavilion
Shade, seating and a covered pavilion for outdoor classes, meals and repair days.
Outdoor work areas
Volunteer shifts last 2 hours at most, outdoors wherever possible.
Play and pet corner
An accessible play corner, and pets welcome outdoors where it's safe. Never in food areas; service animals always welcome.
Indoors
Food and water hub
Shared fridges and freezers, a free water refill point and saved food, so good food never goes to waste. Run to food-safety rules with a named food-safety lead.
Clothing and hygiene
A clothing closet by size and season, and everyday hygiene items. Taken privately, with no sign-in.
Restrooms
Accessible restrooms with all-gender single rooms and a family room with changing tables, plus a bottle filler outside.
Tool and equipment lending
A lending shelf for tools and household equipment, and repair days so things last longer.
Learning rooms and offices
Space for classes, tutoring, language practice, job and digital help, community meetings, and offices for the organizations that work here.
Fitness and movement room
A small room open to everyone for stretching, yoga, chair exercise and simple equipment, with outdoor movement in the courtyard. Classes led by qualified instructors.
Volunteer hub
Shifts last 2 hours at most. Most roles need no training. Roles that need it, like food handling, come with a quick guide. Volunteers help; they never replace required paid staff.
Animal care
Care rooms with their own entrance, an outdoor run and a wash station, plus pet food and supplies on the free shelves. Kept apart, with its own ventilation, for people with allergies or fears. Care is run by a licensed vet or animal rescue. Service animals are welcome everywhere.
Referrals desk
A friendly person and an up-to-date list of existing health and social services. We never keep health records.
Optional, if feasible
Showers and laundry
Private, accessible shower rooms and a small laundry, if the building and running costs allow.
Child-care and early-learning room
A licensed room for young children, run by a licensed child-care provider.
Warming and cooling room
A comfortable room during extreme heat or cold, working alongside public emergency plans, never instead of them.
Safety
- Food follows the FDA Food Code as adopted in Pennsylvania, with a named food-safety lead and a fridge and freezer temperature log.
- The water refill point shows its source, who is responsible, and its latest test with the date.
- Restrooms and rooms follow the ADA and building and fire codes.
- Licensed professionals do all regulated work.
Steps
- Listen to the organizations and neighbors who already do this work.
- Find an existing building with outdoor space near a bus stop, and reach written agreements with the owners.
- Agree in writing with an operating nonprofit and partner organizations.
- Commission a licensed design study: building and fire codes, ADA, costs.
- Name a funding source for every cost.
- Permits and fit-out, with licensed professionals doing regulated work.
- Open small (food and water, restrooms, referrals), then add the rest.
- Measure honestly and share it as a template other communities can copy.
Detailed specifications for building it right, and the materials list, come once there is a real building. Nothing is designed for construction yet. When a building is chosen, a licensed architect and engineers write the drawings, specifications and materials list, with the owner's permission and the required reviews and permits. Materials follow the plan's rules: reused, local and low-carbon first.
Where it stands
Planning phase. There is no building, operator, partner or funding yet, and no hours or services to visit. We will only name an organization as a partner after it agrees in writing.
