One welcoming campus where anyone can get help, meet, learn and grow.
Planning phase. An independent plan; nothing is funded or built yet.
Food and water, clothing, clean restrooms, a tool to borrow, a room to learn in, and a friendly handoff to the services Bethlehem already has. About half of it outdoors. No fees. No account. No ID. Dignity first.
Outdoors
Community garden
Grown here, shared here.
Fruits and vegetables grown on site go straight to the food and water hub.
Courtyard and pavilion
Rain or shine.
Shade, seating and a covered pavilion for outdoor classes, meals and repair days.
Outdoor work areas
Short shifts, fresh air.
Volunteer shifts last 2 hours at most, outdoors wherever possible.
Play and pet corner
If there is room.
An accessible play corner, and pets welcome outdoors where it's safe. Never in food areas; service animals always welcome.
Indoors
Food and water hub
Take what you need. Save what's left.
Shared fridges and freezers, a free water refill point and saved food, so good food never goes to waste. Run to food-safety rules with a named food-safety lead.
Clothing and hygiene
Clean, sorted, free.
A clothing closet by size and season, and everyday hygiene items. Taken privately, with no sign-in.
Restrooms
Modern, clean and welcoming.
Accessible restrooms with all-gender single rooms and a family room with changing tables, plus a bottle filler outside.
Tool and equipment lending
Borrow it, fix it, bring it back.
A lending shelf for tools and household equipment, and repair days so things last longer.
Learning rooms and offices
Room to learn, meet and create.
Space for classes, tutoring, language practice, job and digital help, community meetings, and offices for the organizations that work here.
Fitness and movement room
Move, stretch, breathe.
A small room open to everyone for stretching, yoga, chair exercise and simple equipment, with outdoor movement in the courtyard. Classes led by qualified instructors.
Volunteer hub
Pick a role, like picking a position in a game.
Shifts last 2 hours at most. Most roles need no training. Roles that need it, like food handling, come with a quick guide. Volunteers help; they never replace required paid staff.
Animal care
Room for pets and the people who love them.
Care rooms with their own entrance, an outdoor run and a wash station, plus pet food and supplies on the free shelves. Kept apart, with its own ventilation, for people with allergies or fears. Care is run by a licensed vet or animal rescue. Service animals are welcome everywhere.
Referrals desk
A warm handoff, not a record.
A friendly person and an up-to-date list of existing health and social services. We never keep health records.
Our promises
- No fees, no account and no ID needed to get help.
- We collect the minimum. Visits are counted, never listed by name.
- Nobody who gets help is ever shown publicly.
- A request is seen only by the organization handling it.
- Dietary and allergy details are never public.
- Health information is never stored.
People and work
Our long-term aim is a future where money matters much less, and what counts is people and the work they do together. Every role here has a one-screen quick guide, with tasks as quests and badges for finishing, learning and helping.
For the planet and for people
- Recycle: sorting points at every entrance, in the hub and at every event.
- Compost: unclaimed food and garden waste go to compost that feeds the garden beds.
- Reuse: an existing building, with its fixtures and materials salvaged and reused; a clothing closet, a lending shelf and repair days.
- Protect: people's dignity and privacy, clean water and air, healthy soil, trees and green space.
Places
Bethlehem Community & Care Center
Bethlehem, PA · Planning phase
Reuse and adapt an existing building, about half outdoors.
Connected with: Community Care Network (a planned Project OS module, not built yet); Energy and Logistics Hubs (natural power); Bethlehem Connect (bus and e-bike access); Fitness Network (the fitness room).
Reuse it anywhere
Another town, campus or country can copy the method, the space list, the role guides and the checklists. Land, owners, permits, laws, climate and language are always checked locally, and a copy never carries anyone's personal details. Our aim, not a plan: the same campus could repeat across Pennsylvania, the US and the world.
Built modern and natural
An existing building near a bus stop and the planned e-bike network, reused and adapted, powered only by natural energy (on-site solar and heat recovery, plus solar, wind and geothermal from the planned energy hubs), with natural light, rainwater where code allows, reused local materials and green space.
